Extending the life of your vehicle

When you put your hard-earned cash into the purchase of a car, truck, motorcycle or another vehicle, you’re hoping that it will give you years of utility and enjoyment. Yes, it can be expensive and time-consuming, but the investment you make today will save you money down the road. The future of your vehicle is not totally beyond your control. Taking care of it will keep it going strong.

Cleaning

Keeping your vehicle clean is a simple step for all car owners. If you let your vehicle get dirty on the inside and out, you’ll cause it to age more quickly.

Every day our cars are subjected to the sun, salt, road dirt, rain, smog, tree sap, dead bugs, and bird poop droppings. Over time these things eat away at the paint and can do a number on the metal. Regular wash and waxes will help maintain the outside and keeping it looking like new.

Keeping your car’s interior clean and tidy can reduce stress in your life and make the driving experience more enjoyable. Get in the habit of regularly cleaning out your car.

Driving

If you want to use your vehicle for a long time to come, then you need to pay attention to how you’re using it. When you drive your car in an aggressive manner, you’re wearing it down. While a high-performance vehicle can certainly handle the occasional high-speed turn or slam on the brakes, regular stress isn’t good for the lifespan of any vehicle.

When life is easier on your vehicle, your vehicle’s life will be longer. Here are some items to keep in mind.

  • Do not race your car’s engine during start-up. This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.
  • Accelerate steadily and (when safe) slowly. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first 10 to 20 minutes of operation.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside.
  • Take turns at sensible speeds and don’t constantly be hitting the brakes.
  • Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking.
  • When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.
  • Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear—as well as the pollution your car generates—takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

Routine maintenance

The most important part in the fight to keep your vehicle in pristine condition is, of course, your maintenance. The key is to be proactive because stopping problems when they’re small (or before they even happen) is a whole lot easier and cheaper than waiting until they are full-blown disasters. So read lots of reviews, ask friends and acquaintances, and choose a mechanic carefully. Once you have a trustworthy mechanic, rely on them to make important calls about maintenance and repairs.

Collision Repairs and Replacement Parts

Occasionally, you will need to invest in some serious repairs. No vehicle is indestructible, unfortunately, and you’ll need to consult with our team about your options when the time comes. Generally, we recommend going with OEM (“original equipment manufacturer”) parts, they will likely last you longer and perform more reliably than off-brand parts. Norton’s Body Shop can handle repairs big or small, whether you want to update for cosmetic reasons or it was involved in an accident.

Body repair

It’s not just what’s under the hood that matters! You should be paying attention to the exterior of your vehicle, too, the paintless dent repair experts at Norton’s Body Shop explain. Vehicles can get dinged up, and dents and scratches can be more than cosmetic problems. If rust gets into those spots, it can spell doom for your whole vehicle, explain experts in paintless dent repair. It’s easy to get issues like this fixed, so don’t put it off.
